1The page and the search behind it
Every setting so far applied to the whole site. This module is about one page at a time, in the Rank Math meta box that sits under the editor. You give the page a focus keyword, write the title and description Google shows, tell Google what the page is (Service schema), answer the questions a buyer asks (FAQ block), and link it to the other service pages. The result is a page that matches what a Richmond business owner types and reads well when it appears.
The worked example is the Managed IT Services page for Richmond. Today the site has three pages competing for that search: /managed-services/, /managed-it-support-richmond-va/ and /managed-it-services-in-richmond-expertise-to-elevate-your-business/. Module 02 decides which one survives and what its final slug is. This module assumes the survivor lives at a clean slug such as /managed-it-services-richmond/, and every example below uses that. If module 02 chose a different slug, substitute it.
The search we are writing for is "managed IT services Richmond". That is the phrase in the focus keyword field, and everything on the page is judged against it: the title, the description, the URL, the first paragraph, the headings and the image alt text.
Focus keyword
The search phrase the page is for. One primary phrase per page, and no two pages share one.
Snippet
The title, URL and description Google may show. Written for a person deciding whether to click.
Schema
Structured data that names the page as a Service offered by Hermetic. Read by machines, invisible to visitors.
Links
Links from this page to the other service pages, and from them back. How Google and visitors find the rest of the site.
2The meta box
Open the page in the WordPress editor. In the block editor, click the Rank Math icon in the top toolbar to open the panel; with Beaver Builder pages, the meta box sits under the editor on the page's standard edit screen, not inside the builder. Either way you get four tabs: General, Advanced, Schema and Social. The General tab is where most of the work happens.
Work the tab top to bottom: keyword first, then the snippet, then read the tests. Doing it in that order means the tests are judging the phrase you chose, not a blank.
3The focus keyword
Type managed IT services Richmond in the Focus Keyword field and press Enter. It becomes a chip with a star: the primary keyword. Rank Math runs every test against it.
Three rules for choosing the phrase on any page:
- Buyer's words. Use what a business owner types, not what we call the service internally. "Managed IT services Richmond" and "IT support Richmond" are searches. "vCIO" is not, for most of the people we want.
- One page per phrase. Rank Math's Keyword Uniqueness test warns when two pages share a focus keyword, and that warning is the point: two pages for one search split the result. This is why module 02 merged the three managed services pages into one.
- The page map decides. The phrase for every service page is already in the page map from module 02. Copy it from there. Do not invent a new one at the editor.
You can add more keywords after the primary, separated by Enter. The free plugin allows several; PRO removes the limit. For a service page, a second phrase such as "IT support Richmond" is useful when the page genuinely answers both searches. Rank Math runs a smaller set of tests against secondary keywords, so the primary is the one that matters.
4The snippet: title, URL and description
Click Edit Snippet. Three fields appear: SEO Title, Permalink and Description. These are the three lines a person reads in a Google result before deciding whether to click, so write them for that person and check the tests afterwards.
| Field | What to enter | Why |
|---|---|---|
| SEO Title | Managed IT Services in Richmond, VA | Hermetic Networks | The search phrase in the first 50 characters, then the company. 55 characters, inside Rank Math's 60-character guidance. Google may rewrite the title it shows, so this is the version we hand it. Google decides what it shows. |
| Permalink | managed-it-services-richmond | The phrase, hyphenated, nothing else. The full URL is 62 characters, inside the 75 the URL Length test allows. Changing a live slug is a redirect decision: see module 09 before you touch it. |
| Description | Managed IT services for Richmond, VA businesses: helpdesk, cybersecurity, backup and Microsoft 365 from one local team on Hull Street. Call (804) 544-1048. | What we do, for whom, where, and how to act. 155 characters, inside the 160 guidance. Google may replace it with text from the page, which is one more reason the first paragraph has to say the same thing. |
Delete the template variables the field starts with (%title% %sep% %sitename%) on a service page and type the title by hand. The template from module 05 is the fallback for pages nobody has written a title for; the pages that earn the business get a written one.
Writing rules for the three fields
- Phrase first. The search phrase at the front of the title and near the front of the description, because Rank Math checks the first 50 characters of the title and Google bolds the words that match the search.
- Something the page delivers. The description names the services and the phone number. It does not say "elevate your business", which the current homepage description does, because nobody searches for that and it tells the reader nothing about what happens next.
- Same words as the page. Title, description and the page's H1 and first paragraph should agree. Google can swap the description for page text; when they match, the swap changes nothing.
Rank Math's title and description tests look for the focus keyword as a string. "Managed IT Services in Richmond" has the word "in" inside the phrase, so the test may show amber even though the title is right. Keep the title. The test is a string match; a reader is not, and neither is Google. If you want the checkmark, add "managed IT services Richmond VA" as a second focus keyword rather than making the title read badly.
5The tests, and which ones to ignore
Rank Math scores the page from 0 to 100 across four groups of tests. Red is 0 to 50, amber 51 to 80, green 81 and up. The score is a checklist Rank Math built from common practice. Google does not see it. Treat it as a reminder list, take the tests that describe something a reader would notice, and ignore the ones that would make a service page read like a listicle.
| Group | Test | What it checks | For a service page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic SEO | Keyword in SEO Title | Phrase within the first 50 characters | Take seriously. Accept amber if the only miss is a joining word. |
| Keyword in Meta Description | Phrase present in the description | Take seriously, same caveat. | |
| Keyword in URL | Phrase in the slug | Take seriously. Set once, never change without a redirect. | |
| Keyword at the beginning of content | Phrase in the first 10% of the text, or first 300 words on a short page | Take seriously. The first paragraph says what the page is for. | |
| Keyword in content | Phrase appears in the body | Take seriously. It will pass if the page is about the thing. | |
| Content length | Word-count bands, chart below | Read, do not chase. Write what a buyer needs to decide; the FAQ block adds real length. | |
| Additional | Keyword in subheadings | Phrase in an H2 or H3 | Take seriously. One H2 naming the service is natural. |
| Keyword in image alt | Phrase in at least one image's alt text | Take seriously where it is true of the image. Section 9. | |
| Keyword density | 1 to 1.5% of words; warning at 2.5% and above | Ignore the target, respect the warning. Over 2.5% reads as stuffing. | |
| URL length | 75 characters or fewer including the domain | Take seriously. Two of the current slugs fail this by a wide margin. | |
| External links | At least one link to another site | Optional. Link to Microsoft or CISA only where it helps the reader. | |
| Followed external link | At least one external link without nofollow | Optional, same rule. | |
| Internal links | Links to other pages on our site | Take seriously. Section 9. | |
| Keyword uniqueness | No other page uses this focus keyword | Take seriously. A warning here means the page map has a duplicate. | |
| Content AI | Whether the paid Content AI was used | Ignore. Paid add-on, covered in module 10. | |
| Title Readability | Keyword in first half of title | Phrase in the first 50% of the title | Take seriously. Already true if you followed section 4. |
| Sentiment | Title carries a positive or negative emotion | Ignore. A service title states what the service is. | |
| Power word | Title contains a word from Rank Math's list | Ignore. "Amazing Managed IT Services" costs trust. | |
| Number in title | Title contains a digit | Ignore. Fine for a blog post, wrong for a service page. | |
| Content Readability | Table of contents | A TOC block is present | Ignore on a service page. Use it on long blog posts. |
| Paragraph length | No paragraph over 120 words | Take seriously. Short paragraphs are the house style anyway. | |
| Media | One image or video passes; four or more scores fully | Take seriously up to one or two real images. Do not add stock photos for a score. |
The Content Length test is the one people chase hardest, so here is exactly how Rank Math scores it.
What this chart should change: nothing about how long you write. A business owner comparing three IT companies wants the services, the response time, the area served, the price basis and how to start. Write those fully, add the FAQ block from section 7 with real questions, and let the word count land where it lands. A 2,500-word service page written to hit a bar is a page nobody finishes.
6The Advanced tab
Two settings here matter on a service page. Leave the rest at their defaults.
| Setting | Value on the Managed IT page | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Robots Meta | Index checked. Nothing else. | Tells Google it may show the page. The global default from module 05 is already Index; check that nothing on this page overrides it. "No Index" on a service page removes it from search entirely, which is what the thank-you and opt-out pages get, and no service page ever does. |
| Canonical URL | Blank | Blank means "this page is the original". Rank Math fills the page's own URL. You set a canonical by hand only when two pages must both exist and one should get the credit, which the page map avoided by merging instead. |
| Advanced Robots | Defaults | Snippet and preview limits. Nothing here helps a service page. |
| Breadcrumb Title | "Managed IT Services" | The short name shown in the breadcrumb trail, if breadcrumbs were enabled in module 04. Shorter than the SEO title. |
| Redirect | Off | Sends this page somewhere else. Used on the pages being retired, not on the survivor. Module 09. |
7The Schema tab and the FAQ block
Schema is structured data: a block of JSON in the page that names, for machines, what the page is about. Module 05 set the default schema type for Pages. On a service page, override it with Service, so the page says "Hermetic Networks offers a service called Managed IT Services" in a form Google reads directly.
Service schema fields
| Field | Value | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Managed IT Services | The service, not the page title. |
| Service Type | Managed IT services | Plain words. Google has no fixed list for this field. |
| Description | One sentence lifted from the page's first paragraph | Same words as the page, so the two never disagree. |
| Provider | Filled from the Local SEO settings in module 05 | Hermetic's name, address and phone come through automatically. If they look wrong here, fix them in Titles & Meta, not on the page. |
| Price, Price Currency | Blank | Managed services are quoted, not listed. A blank field is correct; a made-up figure is a Google guidelines problem. |
| Rating | Blank | Google's guidelines require ratings to be real user reviews collected on the page. We do not have that here. Leave it empty. |
The fields the screen shows may not match this table exactly; fill the ones that match and leave the rest empty. Then click Code Validation, then Test with Google, and read the result. An error there means the page is telling Google something malformed; fix it before publishing.
The free plugin attaches one schema type per page. Adding Service and FAQ and LocalBusiness on the same page needs PRO, which is a module 10 decision. Service is the one that describes what this page is, so it gets the slot.
The FAQ by Rank Math block
In the block editor, add the block FAQ by Rank Math at the bottom of the page and fill it with the questions a Richmond business owner asks before calling us. The block does two things: it adds readable content that answers real questions, and it writes FAQ structured data alongside the page. On a Beaver Builder page, add the questions as ordinary heading and paragraph rows in the builder instead; the content still does the first job, and the schema can wait for the PRO decision.
Google announced in August 2023 that FAQ rich results, the expandable questions under a search listing, now show only for well-known authoritative government and health sites. A Richmond IT company's FAQ schema does not produce that display. The block is still worth using, because the questions and answers are content a buyer reads and Google indexes. Do not add it expecting the search result to change shape.
Three questions to start with. Write the answers from what we actually do, in the plain voice of the rest of the site.
- What does managed IT services include? The answer lists the pieces: helpdesk, monitoring, patching, backup, security, Microsoft 365, and what is quoted separately.
- How quickly do you respond when something breaks? Give the real figure from Syncro. The site today claims a response time under 17 minutes; confirm it against the ticket data before you publish it again.
- Do you support businesses outside Richmond, such as Henrico or Chesterfield? Name the areas we drive to and how remote support covers the rest. The answer feeds the city-page decision in module 08.
9Internal links and image alt text
Internal links
Google finds the rest of our site by following links from pages it already knows. A service page with no links out is a dead end for the crawler and for the reader who wanted cybersecurity, not managed services. Two rules:
- From this page, link to the related service pages at their final slugs from the page map: cybersecurity, backup and disaster recovery, Microsoft 365, IT helpdesk, and the contact or schedule page. Use the service name as the link text, not "click here".
- From those pages, link back here wherever managed IT is mentioned. A page that nothing links to is one Google reaches only through the sitemap.
Rank Math's Link Suggestions panel, turned on per post type in Titles & Meta, lists pages that share words with the one you are editing. Use it as a prompt, not an instruction: the page map decides which pages relate.
Image alt text
Module 04 turned on automatic alt attributes so no image ships blank. On a page you are optimizing by hand, write the alt text yourself for each image: what the image shows, in a sentence a screen reader user would find useful. Where an image genuinely shows the service, the focus keyword belongs in it: "Hermetic Networks technician providing managed IT services at a Richmond client office". Where it does not, leave the phrase out. One honest alt with the phrase satisfies the test; five forced ones read as stuffing to Google and as noise to a screen reader.
10The page checklist
Repeat this on every service page, industry page and city page the page map keeps. Print it or keep it open beside the editor.
- Focus keyword copied from the page map. One primary phrase, in the buyer's words.
- Keyword Uniqueness test green. If amber, the page map has a duplicate; fix the map, not the keyword.
- SEO Title typed by hand: phrase first, company last, 60 characters or fewer.
- Permalink: the phrase, hyphenated, 75 characters or fewer for the full URL. Unchanged if the page is live, unless module 09 has a redirect for it.
- Description typed by hand: services, place, phone, 160 characters or fewer.
- H1 and first paragraph say the same thing as the title and description, with the phrase in the first paragraph.
- One H2 or H3 contains the phrase.
- No paragraph over 120 words.
- Keyword density under 2.5%. Ignore the 1 to 1.5% target.
- Sentiment, power word, number in title, table of contents, Content AI: ignored on purpose.
- Advanced tab: Index on, Canonical blank, Breadcrumb Title set, Redirect off.
- Schema tab: Service, with Name, Service Type and Description filled and Price and Rating blank. Test with Google shows no errors.
- FAQ block with at least three real questions and answers, or the equivalent rows in Beaver Builder.
- Social tab: image 1200 by 630, title, description checked in the preview.
- Links out to the related service pages and the contact page, with the service name as link text. Links back from those pages.
- Every image has written alt text; the phrase appears in one where it is true.
- Score read and understood. Green is the aim; amber for a reason you can name is fine.
11Do this now
- Open the page map from module 02 and copy the surviving managed IT page's final slug and focus keyword. Everything below uses them.
- In WordPress, open that page. Find the Rank Math meta box: the Rank Math icon in the block editor toolbar, or the box under the editor on the standard edit screen. Click General.
- Type the focus keyword and press Enter. Watch the test list re-run; the amber marks now describe this page.
- Click Edit Snippet. Replace the title variables with the written title from section 4, check the permalink matches the page map, and paste the description. Watch the character counts under each field.
- Open the page content. Put the phrase in the first paragraph and in one H2. Break any paragraph over 120 words. Save.
- Click Advanced. Confirm Index is the only robots box checked and Canonical is blank. Set the Breadcrumb Title.
- Click Schema, then Schema Generator, choose Service, fill Name, Service Type and Description, save. Click Code Validation, then Test with Google, and read the result in the new tab.
- Add the FAQ by Rank Math block, or the Beaver Builder rows, with the three questions from section 7 and answers you have checked against Syncro.
- Click Social. Upload a 1200 by 630 image with the Hermetic name on it, set the title and description, check the preview.
- Add links from this page to the other service pages and the contact page. Open two of those pages and add a link back to this one.
- Write alt text for every image on the page, with the phrase in one where it is true.
- Update the page. Open it in a private browser window, view the page source, and search for
"@type":"Service"to confirm the schema is in the page. Run the checklist in section 10 top to bottom and tick each line.
12Check yourself
The Managed IT page scores 78 and the amber items are Sentiment, Power word and Number in title. What do you change?
AnswerNothing. All three are Title Readability tests written for blog headlines. A service title states what the service is and for whom. An amber score with reasons you can name is a finished page.
Keyword Uniqueness shows amber on the Managed IT page. Where is the problem, and where do you fix it?
AnswerAnother page has the same focus keyword, which means two pages are aimed at one search. The fix is in the page map from module 02: decide which page survives, merge or redirect the other, and give any page that stays its own phrase. Changing the keyword on this page to make the warning go away leaves the two pages competing.
Google shows a different description under our result than the one you wrote. Did Rank Math fail?
AnswerNo. Google chooses the snippet and can replace the description with text from the page when it judges that a better match for the search. The defence is a first paragraph that says the same thing as the description, so whichever one Google picks, the reader sees the same message.
The Content Length test says the page scores 0% at 480 words. Should you add 2,000 words?
AnswerNo. That test scores nothing under 600 words and full marks at 2,500, and it is one line in Rank Math's checklist. Google publishes no word-count rule. Add the FAQ block with real questions and make sure the page answers what a buyer needs: services, response time, areas, how pricing works, how to start. Stop when those are answered.
Why do Price and Rating stay blank in the Service schema?
AnswerManaged services are quoted per client, so there is no list price to state, and Google's guidelines require ratings in structured data to come from real reviews collected on the page. A number typed in to fill the field is a guidelines violation and, if found, gets the page's rich results removed.
You added the FAQ block. Will the search result now show expandable questions?
AnswerNo. Since August 2023 Google shows FAQ rich results only for well-known authoritative government and health sites. The block is still worth having because the questions and answers are content a buyer reads and Google indexes. Its value is the answer on the page itself.

8The Social tab
When somebody pastes this page's link into LinkedIn, Facebook or Teams, the card they see comes from the Social tab. Left blank, it falls back to the global OpenGraph thumbnail and the SEO title and description from module 05, which is acceptable for most pages. On the pages we share by hand, set it on purpose.
The preview on the tab shows the card as Facebook and X would render it. Check it once, then move on.
